Comedian Samay Raina has been granted an extension by the Mumbai Police to appear for questioning in connection with controversial remarks made by podcaster Ranveer Allahbadia on Raina’s now-deleted YouTube show, India’s Got Latent.
Samay Raina gets an extension from Mumbai Police
The show, which featured Allahbadia (known for his “BeerBiceps” YouTube channel), has drawn significant controversy. With at least two FIRs filed against Allahbadia and Raina – one in Assam and another in Mumbai – due to remarks about parents and sex.
According to PTI, the Mumbai Police have given Samay Raina until March 10th to appear, following a request from his lawyer. An unnamed police official stated that authorities have been unable to contact Allahbadia, whose phone is switched off. Police teams from both Mumbai and Assam have visited his residence, only to find it locked.
Raina’s lawyer cited his client’s current location in the United States as the reason for the extension. The police have also turned down Allahbadia’s request to record his statement at his home. The Mumbai Police have already recorded statements from eight individuals, including Apoorva Mukhija, Ashish Chanchalani, and Allahbadia’s manager, following a complaint filed by a BJP functionary, though no FIR has been registered in that specific case.
Maharashtra Cyber Cell summons 50 people
Furthermore, the Maharashtra Cyber Cell has summoned approximately 50 individuals connected to the show to provide statements. Actor Raghu Ram, a judge on Raina’s show, recently recorded his statement with the agency. Following the backlash, Allahbadia issued a public apology on February 10th, acknowledging his “lack of judgement” regarding the comments. Raina has since removed all episodes of “India’s Got Latent” from his YouTube channel, which had attracted millions of views. He stated on social media that the situation has been a bit too much for him to handle. Samay also pledged full cooperation with investigative agencies.
